Virtual Safari:
Zebra

Zebra are absolutely the most striking herd
animal to see up close. They horse-like mannerisms contrast their
distinctively exotic appearance. We came across this herd (left,
above) of about 60-70 zebra in Kruger National Park. Did that scar
(right, above) come from a close call with a predator?
It is not uncommon to see many different herd animals grazing in the same areas. They each consume a different part of the bush, so there is little competition for food. Large numbers also provide a measure of safety.
No matter how many zebra you see (and you see a lot of them), you can't help but marvel at the sharp details of their signature stripes. These stripes are more than just window dressing, as they provide camouflage from predators. They are also unique--no two zebra have the same pattern of stripes. Young zebra use this to identify their mothers in a large herd.
