The hyena is probably South Africa's most famous (and dangerous) scavenger.  They are common, travel in packs of 8-10, and have been known to hunt as well as feed on carrion.

Yes, they laugh...they really do.  Actually, it's more like a cackle, but it sounds human enough to give you a chill.
