Virtual Safari:
Hunting Dogs
The endangered hunting (or wild) dog is
quite rare--you typically do not see them in Hluhluwe-Umfolozi.
These animals are the size of German shepherds and travel in small packs
like this one (there were about 5-7 of them).
When we came across them, they were tracking a
wildebeast (gnu) about 200 yards in the distance. When the dogs
saw us, they broke off the hunt and began playing in a large
field. At first we thought they were jackals, but when we checked
our guide book later that evening, we found out we had a special treat.
Surprisingly, these were the only predators we saw in
Hluhluwe-Umfolozi (birds of prey notwithstanding) that year. The dense
foliage and our lack of wilderness experience may be the reason.
For all we know, we passed right by a pack of leopards without even
knowing it!
