Virtual Safari:
Critters
We just couldn't resist taking pictures of
some of South Africa's smaller residents. Actually, they were
really quite big. The grasshoppers (above) were about six inches
long and very bright (as you can see). We found them in the
Drakensberg Mountains in KwaZulu at a posh resort called the
Cathedral
Peak Hotel.

The snail (right) had a shell as big as an
apple. It wandered slowly through the early morning mist at
Hilltop Camp in Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve.

And who could forget the cute cuddly little frog? Or is it a toad? We not sure but we know these were some big Mamma Jammas. We caught them on a rainy night at a sleepy seaside resort in the Eastern Cape called the Haga Haga Resort. It's great: for a reasonable price (assuming you fill a cabana), you get a nice room on the beach and two fabulous meals (breakfast & dinner) complete with the day's fresh catch. You also get whale watching from your patio at the right time of year. If you have (or want) nothing to do...this is the place not to do it (huh?).
Some things only come out at night, which makes doing what I did a bad idea: I decided to take a little stroll around the bush camp one night. It didn't occur to me that just about anything can get around the electric fences, so they afford little protection against predators (or snakes, for that matter). Fortunately, the only thing I came across in my short stroll was this bush baby--I think he was more afraid of me than I was of him. These small mammals are nocturnal herbivores who make a racket when they jump onto the metal roof of your cabin at 3AM.
