The Zulu

The Zulu are among the most famous of all of South Africa's peoples thanks, in part, to the exploits of their warrior chief, Shaka.  Under his reign, the Zulu grew from a small clan to the most powerful nation in South Africa.  The Zulu warrior was fear of eastern South Africa, toppling nations in their wake as they tore through the countryside.  Europeans who observed the Zulu in combat marveled at their courage and discipline; a discipline they thought impossible among African peoples.

Zulu women have gained a reputation worldwide for artistic talents.  Dancers, performing under 50 pounds of beads, overwhelmed early European visitors and their routines continue to impress to this day.  Their beaded adornments are made with an intricacy that is considered among the best in the world.  Furthermore, basket weavers integrate both society and history in their detailed patterns.  Using natural materials and dyes, they create baskets with artistic merit as well as practicality.
